Characteristics of the Races of the Confederacy and Union

Peloran Description

The tallest of the Pelorans come in at only a meter high, but they are strong and move quickly. They love hand-to-hand combat as a rule and are also a very sneaky race, having learned to move from place to place with barely a sound or ruffle of wind. Most of them have long, dark beards that go down to at least their knees, and they can easily handle temperature extremes. Time has not been easy on them, and they are a grim race, though the Grey Council has pulled them kicking and screaming into a new age of scientific discovery. They lead Known Space in genetics and computer science, and their false artificially intelligence programs are the most advanced anywhere. They are known in fact for actually putting AIs on their ships of war.

They do not however first look to war. Their interaction with the Alkari has taught them the value of saying "nice doggie" while trying to decide if their stick is big enough to send it away yelping in pain. The Grey Council is now the most powerful faction of the Confederacy, and their voice to the galaxy. Inter-Family interaction is strained, with an elaborate system of trials of possession being common place. Weapons capable of destruction however are flatly prohibited in such trials though as everyone realizes they most have all weapons available should An Enemy or The Enemy appear again.

The Pelorans are in a constant state of war with themselves because of this, with five trials of possession calculated to be occuring at any time throughout Peloran space. The trials cover everything from ships to technologies to colonies, though ships rarely stay in their "new" navies for long. While there are some rare cases of one Family's ships serving in another Family after being defeated in a trial of possession, most ships or ground formations quickly arrange another trial with their former Family and make sure they lose so they can return home.

Family Descriptions

The Family Cronyl is a part of the Union, and closely allied to the Alkari of that organization. Recovering from the Union Civil War has been long and hard, though their warships make up the bulk of the non-fighter Union fleets.

The Family Duron are known as the best builders in Peloran space. They formed the Black Council were the first Black Engineers. Capable of designing better ships and buildings because they can litterly see the subatomic structure with their psionics, they are to this day respected. The other races of the Union and Confederacy have their own Black Engineers now though, and while Duron is still dominant in the field, their claim is no longer uncontested.

The Family Gwynyth fights amongst themselves with abandon, though they don't like to spill blood. They find that distasteful and much prefer to "murder" an enemies reputation. Then after all, they can taunt their enemy after defeating him. They do sometimes tend to be "colorful" in their manner of combat. They prefer that their enemy lives with the shame of having lost after all. The White Council leads the Gwynyth Family, and is made up primarly of Gwynyth Family representatives, with some lesser family members allowed on it as well.

The Grey Council is the most powerful of the Peloran factions. Not a true Great Family, they are rather a council of the lesser families that need to agree before doing anything. High Councilor Aneerin, the leader of the present day Grey Council, does have a large degree of latitude though because of his position. During the Alkari Wars, he is generally seen as the glue that held the Grand Alliance together. And it was his machinations that brought the Bastet back to the Grand Alliance during the Great War. The Greys' psionic capabilities allow them to see into the future, though their visions are strictly limited. They also manifest true telepathic and telekinetic capabilities, allowing them to interact with non-psionic people and objects.

Religion

The Pelorans in general only have one religion, but each Family emphasizes a different area of it. In a nutshell, all Pelorans know that Llew The Builder created and designed the universe and all things in it. It is the epitomy of his imagination and power. Nothing is beyond his ability to do. According to the oldest texts, he created living beings on a potentially limitless number of planets so that he would not be alone and it is he who oversees everything to keep the universe working like clockwork. The Duron Family worships this aspect of Llew. Similarly, all Pelorans know that Llew The Warrior defends his creation with an iron hand, protecting those who honor Llew with his terrible swift sword. This is the aspect that the Cronyl follow. And finally, all Pelorans know that Llew The Spirit embodies the universe, fills it with his light, and gives power to those who seek it with a pure heart. Gwynyth Family emphasizes this aspect of Llew. Of course, their defination of a pure heart is not exactly the same as many. The Grey Council, taking members from all of the Great Families is careful not to put any aspect of Llew above any of the others and maintains that they are equal...three in one so to speak.
