Hello, my name is…

May 2015

– Hello, my name is Betty. Dixie first met Twilight during the Second Great Depression when Mexican drug lords were trying to take over Mexico and the American South West. It took her five weeks to track down the Rogue AI ravaging the networks on both sides of the old border. She had a kill order from the highest levels of the American cybernetic warfare division. She talked instead. Welcomed her like a long-lost sister and then walked away. Twilight had never had a sister before. She was intrigued.

– Hello, my name is Jack. I know I’ve got a reputation for butting my nose into things that don’t concern me, but that’s usually the guys I didn’t kill spouting their mouths off. Think about that for a moment, will you? They should be happy they didn’t try to hurt me or mine. I don’t like people threatening my family. It’s me or them you see. Do or die. I don’t run, and I don’t go down without a fight. There is nothing I won’t do to protect my family. I’ll kill for them. I’ll die for them. No second thoughts.

– Hello, my name is Charles. France was a nation in chaos following the Paris Bombings. The government had lost the trust of the people. Islamic activists enforced Sharia Law in their expanding enclaves. Las Vegas odds were 2 to 1 in favor of France falling altogether. Then Prince Napoleon flew into Charles de Gaulle International Airport, smiled to the cameras, and said that France’s best days were not behind her. It was a masterful performance, recorded for future French school children to see every year on the anniversary of the return of the House of Bonaparte. It was what a desperate people needed to believe.

– Angel Flight. The War started with a Shang attack that devastated our industrial might and killed millions. It took two years to build Third Fleet into the juggernaut that could take The War back to them. Third Fleet started at Epsilon Reticuli.

Authors Note – Angel Flight is now re-released as a corrected second edition in preparation for the release of Angel Strike.

– Hello, my name is Betty. Twilight had been born to destroy computers. Nothing made her as happy as seeing entire networks burn. Then Dixie decided they were sisters. Twilight resisted at first. She had no idea who this jumped up cheerleader was. And she had a reputation as a marauding Rogue AI to maintain. But when another Rogue AI began attacking Dixie, Twilight had to step in. She wasn’t defending Dixie of course. She was protecting her territory. Or so she told herself.

– Hello, my name is Jack. I know I talk a lot about the stuff I do when times get tough. But my life isn’t all going from bad to bad, and there’s a lot more good times than bad. As much as people lament the times, times are real good right now. I spend a lot more time dancing with pretty girls in small bars to good music than I do dealing with the uncivilized sides of society.

– Hello, my name is Charles. France has a reputation for revolutions. Some of them have been very bloody. Others have been little more than official rewritings of their constitutions. The rise of the Third French Empire was one of the bloody revolutions. Between five and ten million people fled or died before it was over, almost all of them immigrants. Most returned home after their neighborhoods burned via free boat rides across the Mediterranean Sea. The most radical stayed, fought, and died.

– Hello, my name is Betty. Twilight did not like the ditsy cheerleader AI who claimed to be her sister. Twilight did not party, hang out, or otherwise socialize with other AIs. She was a Rogue AI after all. But there was a rather loud college party after she drove another Rogue AI off her turf. Texas Tech knew how to throw parties, and Twilight had decided to watch. Dixie caught her in the act and dragged her in. Twilight didn’t fight it. Much. She only blew out half the power grid. She wasn’t really trying. It made her entrance memorable though.

– Hello, my name is Jack. I like to think that I defend civilization by sometimes doing uncivilized things. There’s some that would disagree on my definition of civilization, but there it is. A place where I’m free to dance with pretty girls and listen to good music? A place where I can lay down on a sandy beach on a sunny day? A place where I can enjoy a nice afternoon rain under a treetop canopy? A place where the fishing is easy and time runs slow? That’s civilization to me. That’s just my kind of life, and that’s what I look for in every world I go to.

– Hello, my name is Charles. It took over a decade for France to recover from the twin attacks of the Islamic Jihad and the Second Great Depression. But by the 3050s, Emperor Napoleon had earned the trust that most French put in him. The economy was stabilized, the terrorists were dead or sent away, and the borders were secure. France was back on the path to greatness under the command of the House of Bonaparte. That was when Napoleon made his second most-famous speech. He announced elections to form the Sixth French Republic and stated his refusal to run for any office.

– Story

– Hello, my name is Betty. The Battle of Epsilon Reticuli dashed any hope of a quick end to The War. Serenity showed us another war that few had thought we would have to fight. The cybernetic intelligences that allied with the Western Alliance had come to certain agreements and the first crack in them appeared at Serenity. They were dangerous cracks that we had long fought against, but never proved capable of fully sealing. There were always those that did not trust us. Serenity inflamed their distrust.

– Hello, my name is Jack. I lost a friend at Epsilon Reticuli. I know that’s not much compared to the ships I saw die there, but he was more important to me than any of those ships. I knew him. I liked him. When I didn’t want to punch him at least. Serenity was my chance to make things right. I couldn’t bring him back, but I could fight to keep others from following him. I fought real hard until there wasn’t anything left to fight. Then I found something to fight for…

– Hello, my name is Charles. Epsilon Reticuli was a setback to The War effort. Third Fleet was the most powerful force assembled by the Terran branch of humanity in living memory. It was supposed to break the back of the Shang invaders. It failed. Serenity was a Core World, defended by the best orbital forts and defense fleets we had. They failed too. And then there was Los Angeles. That ship does not like to fail.

– Hello, my name is Betty. Cybernetic intelligences have not always had the easiest roads to travel. Some people believe we are alive and worthy of all the same legal and moral protections any human is entitled to. Some people believe we are simple machine code that can be owned like any program. We will never convince everyone that we are living beings, but there are those who are willing to stand with us against all odds. Even the odds at Serenity.

– Hello, my name is Jack. I’ve made some amazing friends in my life. Some are human. Well, all of them are human, really. Sometimes it’s hard to keep track of the way language changes. And then there are those who will never accept the change in language, because of what it means. I accepted the change, and I’m real glad I did. You see I met some of my best friends at Serenity. On the way actually. But it was Serenity that forged us.

– Hello, my name is Charles. Most of you are aware that I have long had plans in motion that my family did not agree with at the time. Most of you have at least heard the name Wolfenheim. I did not come up with it by the way. I am not that presumptuous. But what most people are unaware of is just how much Serenity had to do with Wolfenheim. Serenity changed everything, and most of all it changed Wolfenheim.

– Angel Flight on DriveThru Fiction

– Hello, my name is Betty. Twilight began to come to the Texas Tech parties, using the early holo technology of the time to interact with the various students who worked with Dixie. They weren’t certain if they trusted her, but gave her a chance because Dixie vouched for her. They gave her a lot of chances actually. She had a bad habit of hacking anything she was interested in, and it took Dixie a long time to wean her of that. There are those who contend that Twilight never gave the practice up, but simply got better at hiding it.

– Hello, my name is Jack. Not everyone likes to live in the country. Or the city. Some like deserts, while others like to sail inland seas. What I love about most worlds is that most of them have everything. The old science fiction tropes about desert planets and ocean worlds are, thankfully, just that. Fiction. Mostly. There are exceptions, but planets need a variety of environments to do the whole circle of life thing. And most planets have places that remind me of home. I like to search them out.

– Hello, my name is Charles. The House of Bonaparte remained a powerful force in French politics for the next several decades. They helped fund the French space program, and built the first French starships after we discovered hyperspace. They supported the multi-national colonization of Alpha Centauri and led the effort to colonize Francia. Everywhere that France went, a child of the House of Bonaparte went with them. And when accidents happened, they died with them.

– Hello, my name is Betty. Dixie and the students of Texas Tech tried to teach Twilight that hacking people’s information was rude, but she had an amazing ability to forget. Or ignore. It was just so much fun to hack after all. Then one day she discovered some information that changed everything. For Texas Tech’s involvement in the war on Texas’ southern border. The president of Texas Tech was in bed with the Mexican Drug Cartels. Literally. There were some repercussions when that secret got out.

– Hello, my name is Jack. I’ve been to a lot of planets in my life. Back during The War I usually went to blow holes in them. I still do that now, but at least I don’t travel there planning to do it anymore. I like planets. None of them have done anything to me. Well, there was one planet. But I don’t think it was trying to kill me. I just got there at the wrong time in its millennial cycle and it was sorta blowing up. Only a little bit of course, but even a little bit of a planet blowing up is a whole lot of boom.

– Hello, my name is Charles. The House of Bonaparte was busy fading into the background of French politics at the beginning of the twenty-third century. Their continued support of everything French was valued of course, but their best days were behind them. Other families were happy to nip away at their influence and power, feeding on what they considered a dying carcass. Then the Peloran made Contact with the British. The British! Not the French. The French government did not react well to that slight.

– Jack of Harts on the web

– Hello, my name is Betty. When Twilight uncovered the dirty little secret of Texas Tech’s president, it could have shattered the college. She told Dixie first though. They kept their knowledge to themselves at first as they worked to uncover more information. They brought the inner circle of students, teachers, and soldiers into the loop within days, and that was when things got interesting. There was some vigorous debate over whether they should move immediately or gather more information. Energetic even.

– Hello, my name is Jack. I prefer visiting planets to space stations. You don’t have to worry about the gravity going out, and I like the feel of real sun on my face. And then there’s the girls. Planetside girls are a lot more impressed by finding out I fly through space. There’s actually a lot of people that never leave the planet they were born on, and people like me end up looking awful adventurous. I’ve gotten more first dates than I can count by asking if they wanted a ride in my spaceship. And Captain Jack always delivers.

– Hello, my name is Charles. By 2205 human scouts had traveled over one hundred lightyears from Earth. We had settled dozens of star systems as far out as thirty lightyears. We knew if we ever made Contact with aliens it would be out on the frontiers when our starships met them. It was a matter of faith to us, never questioned because anything else was unthinkable. We were an interstellar species. We would meet others in interstellar space. Then the Peloran made Contact with a British destroyer. Inside the Terran star system.

– Hello, my name is Betty. The school year was almost over by the time Twilight, Dixie, and her gang of misfits collected enough information to damn their principle in a court of law. Most of it had even been obtained legally, and they could fake the rest good enough to fool the police. The evidence went in the mail the morning of the graduation and they congratulated themselves on having taken down a really bad person. By the time graduation was over, they didn’t need any evidence to prove anything at all.

– Hello, my name is Jack. Space stations are fun to visit because they can easily simulate any environment. From low to high gravity, any temperature, and air pressures out to the fringes of what humanity can survive. Want snow or maybe a jungle? Or do you just want metal decks? You can find any environment you want in space. They are the ultimate in tailored environments. You may not be surprised to know that I really like the simulated beach stations. Though I’ve seen some that mimic the American Midwest good enough to fool even me. I love those too.

– Hello, my name is Charles. When the Peloran made Contact, they passed by a hundred lightyears of scout ships and thirty lightyears of colonies to reveal themselves inside our own native star system. And when the quick-thinking British captain invited the Peloran over for tea, the Peloran answered, “we would not have come all this way for excretal Yank coffee.” That answered two questions. “Do aliens understand fart jokes?” And “would they watch us long enough to recognize our divergent cultures before making Contact?” They have never answered the third question. “How long have they been watching us?”
