Overview:
First unveiled in September 3061, one month after the last of the First Dirty Dozen, the Pinto PR1 hailed the beginning of the Second Dirty Dozen, this one of vehicles. Believed to be designed as an undercover escort for the original Pinto, this one is more heavily armed, armored, faster, and has a longer-effective firing range then her older cousin. That she lacks the multi-role capability of the original does not seem to matter to PRI marketers. Whether originally designed that way or not, she is an excellent assault chopper.

Capabilities:
The refitted Pinto replaces the Robinson 160 Fuse-Pak power plant with a DAV 220 XL engine for greater speed and less mass. It also replaces the Krupp Armament's Draco-100 Ferro-Fibrous armor plating with the Rock Hard 2 Ferro-Fibrous armor built on Pryde Rock. The Pinto's three Blankenburg Technologies medium lasers were replaced by two FarStar-C ER Medium Lasers but are still mounted in the chin turret located immediately forward of the cockpit. An additional false laser construct is placed between the two lasers to make it look like the original. The forward firing, Artemis equipped Magna LRM-5 system was replaced by the FireSwarm-C LRM-20 system situated in the belly mount.

Taking a lesson from the Atlas, PRI technicians altered the actual mechanism of the launcher to have only five tubes that would fire a fast quadruple volley of LRM's before shutting down for cooling. The bulk of the larger LRM system is placed where the cargo bay once was, depriving this Pinto of the combined arms capability of the original.

The new lasers reduce the Pinto's damage minutely, but give it increased accuracy and range, while the new missiles enable this Pinto to push out massive amounts of damage without weathering short and medium ranged fire. With two full minutes worth of ammunition, this new Pinto can afford to fire from long range before coming in close to bring the lasers to bear.

When it chooses to do this of course, it will be able to close all the faster with the compact but expensive jet booster system replacing the Beagle Active Probe of the original and complementing the more powerful drive already in it.

Another addition was the Talk & Trac 10 comm. and targeting system so successful in the First Dirty Dozen. The system appears to be even more powerful in the more stable firing platform of a chopper and beyond the standard increased battlefield knowledge granted by it's use, the targeting system, tied to the pilot's eyes, is much more accurate then a normal chopper's system. [in addition to the normal +1 initiative bonus when commanding a unit, also give the chopper a +1 gunnery bonus at all times.]

Finally, the PRI technicians made sure to keep the Pinto easily transported, like the original, when performing their refits. The VTOL's rotors can be dismantled in less than five minutes, so that the Pintos can be stored in conventional vehicle or cargo bays as well as in dedicated aerospace bays required for fixed-wing aircraft and many VTOLs.

Deployment
Many soldiers and, more importantly quarter masters, question whether the increased price and loss of multi-role capability is offset by the increase in accuracy and firepower. Until it is proven either way, we believe this Pinto will be only lightly ordered, especially as it costs nearly five times that of the original. Dedicated air-superiority without the extra functions of the original is not seen as a good thing by many.

This version of the Pinto is presently being tested by the 388th (White Banshees) Com Guard Division in conjunction with older Pintos. We believe it is being to tested to see if it can operate as a good Pinto-escort. It is possible though that they are designing it to work with the other VTOLs (also older Star League designs) soon to be upgraded at PRI.

After the Com Guard's attempts to sabotage our Krupp's Bochum plant, we only hope this new vehicle does not enter their service. Able to duel with our own Pintos and destroy them from long range, our own crews would not know they were up against this more dangerous version until it fired it's lasers or LRMs, or moved to outmaneuver them with their higher speed.
