Overview:

         The Mako is a refit of the old Star League Hellcat II.   Starting in 3047 Shadow Guards Aerospace Command noticed an increased amount of jumpship activity near the Chainlane Isles.   Although they would not find this out until five years later it was the Clans returning to that part of space to begin thier conquest of the Inner Sphere.   In 3048 First and Second Mech Battalions were dispatched to several planets that experienced increases in traffic.   What they found was something out of thier nightmares.   After playing cat and mouse, something to which the mercenaries were ill suited they were able to defeat the Clans on three planets.   While the Guards knew little of this opponents ways they did know that they wanted the technology that it had.   Many warriors still blame the Force Commander Ian Allard for the "retarded" number of deaths.   Allard on several occasion could have stopped the small Clan force, however, he choose to take as much salvage as possible.   While this would have proved useful to the Guards elite pilots many of those men and women died at the hands of the Clan oppresors.   Only the Aerospace Command headed by Admiral Tezzerene was greatful for this approach.   Time and again the Shadow Guards' aerospace contingent proved itself superior to thier Clan counterparts.   In the end three Clan fighters wre captured intact and nearly one hundred tons of Clan level equipment was taken from depots on the planet.   As a reward for thier bravery and skill Aerospace command was given the three fighters as well as nearly fifty percent of the salvage.   The Mako is the fusion of the Inner Sphere and Clan components available to the Guards.

Capabilities:

         The ancient test pilots of the original Hellcat II compared it to a flying tank.   This was blamed on the standard armor that was used.   During its redesign the Hellcat II switched to Ferro-Aluminium armor, Mineria Aero has stuck with that design feature for the Mako.   While linking the Beagle Active Probe and the crafts four extended range medium lasers at first proved near immpossible Mineria engineers have at last solved the problem.   With the lasers now linked to the probe they have become an extremely deadly weapon once again.   Even though Mineria has a hatred for PPC type weapons the inclusion of the Clan version was more out of neccesity.   It was one of the few weapons that the Guards raiding forces were returning with in abundance, since it also filled out the extra space the move was deemed acceptable.   One major change about the Mako from its predecessor is the switch to the Rawlings 250 XL fusion engine.   The extra weigh gained by such a move was deemed acceptable by the admirality and engineers in charge of the design.

Battle History:

         The Mako has only been in service for around four months, though four refits have been in service since 3052.   All pilots assigned to the craft have enjoyed it immensly and have nothing but praise for the design.   In recent action against Comstar the design has proved especially effective.   Comstar fighters are unable to match the shear firepower and range of the Mako with similar designs.   One battle only two months ago on the planet Mordor bore this out.   When a radical faction of Comstar dropped onto the planet with the express purpose of taking over the Mineria factories the Shadow Guards swung into action to protect thier assets.   While the mercs were barely holding thier own on the ground the battle in the air was turned against the Comgurads force.   Major Levan in his personal Mako tallied six kills and the rest of his squadron accounted for seventeen.   The Comguards had taken total aerospace loses by day three of the battle.   Total Shadow Guards' loses amounted to six fighters amd not one was a Mako.   Review of the battleroms after the battles show that Mako amounted for 73.45 percent of air kills and more immpresively 27.56 percent of kills on the ground.

Variants:

         With the exception of the Inner Sphere version it is unlikely that any variants of this design will be forthcoming.   Some have speculated though that if Mineria could obtain a Clantech weapon that would replace the ER PPC that such a change would most likely be readily made.

Notable Vessels & Crews:

         Major Joshua Levan served in the navy of the Federated Suns until 3058 when a close friend convinced him to join the Shadow Guards Aerospace Command.   The Major quickly rose through the ranks and was given control of the entire fleet when Admiral Tezzerene stepped down.   Major Levan refuses to accept the rank of Admiral until the death of Tezzerene and so has retained the rank of Major for all three years of his tenure.   While piloting his personal Mako, the first to be refitted after the battles in 3048, and the one that belonged to Tezzerene during his tenure, the Major has never once lost his ride.   At first glance this would appear to be due to his use of the Clan's advanced technology.   While Major Levan does state that the Clantech gives him an extra edge none who have flown agianst him would doubt his abilities.   The few individuals that have doubted him have been quickly disabused of that notion, most when thier fighters come crashing to the ground after Major Levan pulls some aerojock manuever and then hits an opponent from an unlikely vector.

Deployment

         Mineria Aero has only recently begun to put the Mako into full scale production.   Continued raid into the rear areas of the Jade Falcon OZ keep the supplies of the Clan equpiment at levels that allow for prodcution.   All fighters completed so far, eight including 4 refits have been assigned directly to Aerospace Command.   There is little possibility that Mineria will be selling this fighter on the open market due to the Clantech contained within the design.   Mineria is currently working on an Inner Sphere redesign and hopes to have prototypes available for demonstartion by years end.   Mineria in a odd move has begun to allow Pryde Rock industries to employ the design.   What benefits Mineria is gaining from this are unknown but the addition of Rock manufactured electronics has substantially increased the effectiveness of this design.   Further details on this apperently foolish move are unkown at this time, however they continue to be investigated.
