Overview:

Wakazashi Enterprises has been one of the best known AeroSpace construction firms in the Human Sphere since the days of the Star League. They almost left Combine space for the Periphery after the Star League fell, but the Coordinator kept them in Combine space by offering them a major AeroSpace military contract. This has turned out to be a very good move, as they are one of the few remaining Draconis AeroSpace manufacturers in modern day.
This has had the side effect of keeping the impressive Wakazashi Rescue VTOL in Combine service for all of the last five centuries. First built in the late 26th century, the Wakazashi Rescue VTOL ushered in a revolution in rescue VTOL operations. It became the most common rescue VTOL of the Star League Army in fact, and they copied the basic design to make their Cobra series of transports. In the Terran Sphere, the Succession Wars made fusion engines too expensive to be on a mere vehicle, and the Wakazashi Rescue VTOL basically ceased to exist outside the Draconis Combine.
They built the lowtech Wakazashi AirRescue during this time period, and even in the Combine the fusion-powered Rescue became increasingly rare. The discovery of the Gray Death Memory Core and the revitalization of technology it heralded allowed Wakazashi to begin building the small fusion engines that gave the prime Wakazashi Rescue VTOL its full spectrum of capabilities.

Capabilities:

The Wakazashi Rescue does not use standard rotors. Like its descendants, the Star League Cobra and Clan Anhur, the Wakazashi Rescue uses several vectored thrust fans that use superheated exhaust from the fusion engine to maintain altitude. Environmental sealing keeps it safe in hostile environments, from effectively liquid to airless ones, and it is in such hostile-to-aircraft environments that the Wakazashi Rescue thrives. The fusion engine has more in common with the AeroSpace Fighter engines that Wakazashi uses than with the engines that other vehicles use, making it capable of manuevering in space or beneath an ocean surface. A one ton fuel reserve allows for extended manuevers in airless environments, making it a favorite of asteroid mining concerns.
Faster than the basic rescue choppers that other companies make, the Wakazashi Rescue can easily maintain a speed of over 160 kilometers an hour in one standard atmospheric pressure, like that of Old Terra's pressure at sea level. At lesser pressures, the Wakazashi Rescue is capable of higher maximum speeds, though it cannot challenge AeroSpace or Conventional Fighters. Optimized for flight over planetary surfaces, it can only generate 1.5 gees of safe thrust in space.
All of this mobility is designed to get the Wakazashi Rescue to its target destination, whethere that is 100 kilometers above sea level or a kilometer below the surface, as quickly as possible. Once there, a full operating theater allows the crew to quickly get to work saving lives. A small passenger holding area can help in evacuations as well, making fleets of Wakazashi Rescue VTOLs a welcome sight in areas expecting imminent devastation.

Deployment

Thanks to a long line of Coordinators paying Wakazashi not to send spare parts to outside concerns, the Wakazashi Rescue is a purely Combine vehicle, though some surviving Clans do field the Anhur, a heavier though slower descendant of it, for infantry transport.
