Overview:

A network of companies employing a wide variety of vehicles and equipment feeds the insatiable hunger of the Human Sphere’s industrial base. Earthmovers and transports are legion. Sometimes both functions are combined in a single vehicle. Iron, aluminum, germanium, uranium, and titanium-the ore bearing these metals is bulky and moving it is a task for some of the largest ground vehicles in common usage.

Capabilities:

Produced at numerous sites across the Inner Sphere by the mammoth Earthwerks Corporation, the Lesseps Dump Truck is typical of the kind of vehicle used at mines and on construction sites. While battery-powered vehicles suffer from a number of issues that restrict their usage, this method of powering a vehicle works well when it is tied to a specific location. Equipped with all-wheel drive and a rugged suspension, the vehicle can negotiate rough terrain commonly found in the locations where it is employed. While nobody would call it fast, the Lesseps can transport about seventy tons at over twenty kph.
In the late thirtieth century Earthwerks was plagued with complaints of the Lesseps spontaneously bursting into flames. A thorough investigation finally traced the problem to the vehicle’s battery packs. Manufactured in the Capellan Confederation by a subcontractor, the faulty packs were prone to overheating. The original specifications had been correct, but after cheaper materials were introduced in an ill-conceived effort to improve profit margins, the units became dangerously unstable after prolonged use.
Earthwerks moved quickly to replace all faulty battery units, but a number of competitors managed to take advantage of the bad press the incident created and made large inroads into the regions that Earthwerks had maintained a majority market in.

Deployment

Lesseps dump trucks can be seen throughout the Federation Expanse, the Free Worlds League, Capellan Rump States, and the Tikonov Free Republic. While some nobles have tried to place them on a "do not sell" list, Earthwerks has so far been able to keep their ability to sell them to anybody they wish, but few nations Coreward of Terra have shown interest in purchasing them.
Some nations have modified their Lesseps with cannons, using them in combat. Earthwerks, wishing to keep them listed as pure civilian equipment and thus non-embargoed, takes a very dim view on such modifications and has made it a policy to place a complete embargo of all goods manufactured by Earthwerks on any such nation.
On some worlds of the Human Sphere a curious subculture has grown up around massive vehicles like this. Sporting colorful paint schemes and heavily modified (defiantly invalidating the manufacturer’s warranty), these vehicles are pitted against each other in contests of speed, pulling power, and endurance.
