Overview:

The Word of Blake Jihad shattered the Federated Suns, leaving her economy in tatters and most of her factories in ruins. The Federation spent little time wallowing in pity after the war ended, or even before it ended. Even as the Avalon-class Melissa Davion and her escorts fought the Word of Blake at Terra, the Federation could be found rebuilding what was lost.
The ability and technical know-how to begin building the Fox class of WarShips was first in their line of priority. They'd learned the harsh lesson about not having enough of a fleet to stop the Word of Blake tactics, and the Federation poured its resources into rebuilding the WarShip program.
The rebuilding bore fruit in 3081, when the first new Fox, now called a Fox I, launched from the rebuilt Galax shipyards. The Federation at the time, and to this day, is unable to build many of the advanced technologies on the Fox in bulk, but they pooled what they could build in small amounts for the capital ship program. That is why the Fox series of WarShips all carry advanced armor, pulse lasers, and the heavy automation that the original Fox had. The new Fox series has much heavier anti-fighter armament and more armor than the original Fox-class, and the years since have seen many Fox I, Fox II, and Fox III destroyers built.
The Fox II is capable of generating higher acceleration rates but loses the heavy naval lasers of the Fox I, replacing them with large banks of pulse lasers. It has a smaller cargo hold as well, but is still sufficient to maintain the ship and her escorts on extended patrols. The Fox III sports even heavier engines, and loses most of the heavy autocannons of the slower Foxes, replacing them with the best smaller autocannons the Federation can produce. It carries a smaller amount of cargo than the Fox II, but practical experience shows that even the Fox III can command and maintain a squadron throughout a deployment.
The Fox series destroyer is the most common capital ship seen in the Federated Suns, and many nations formerly related to the Federation builds one or more versions of the craft. They sell them to other states as well, the cash-strapped Federation always willing to take the funds necessary to continue the slow rebuilding of the nation.
