Overview:

         ComStar's original three Dante-class vessels were built in the short period between 2935 and 2949, products of the renovation of the Star League-era shipyards at Titan and increased militarism within the order. Though ComStar retained a number of ex-SLDF WarShips in mothballs, most of these vessels demanded large crews that the order was unable to supply. Primus York sought the creation of the heavily automated Dante-class as a stopgap measure to support the nascent ComStar Guards and Militia while the other vessels were refurbished and new crews trained.
         The first Dante entered service in 2941, and two more followed. The spiraling cost of renovating the remainder of the fleet, however, and the difficulty of hiding both the vessels and the large number of naval personnel led to the program being frozen in 2949. After the Clan Invasion, ComStar considered buiding more, but the Word assault on Terra in 3058 and then Titan Yard's defection to the Word after the Star League conference of 3061 made those plans impossible.
         The Word built some Dantes before and during the Jihad, but they all died, along with the ComStar Dantes, and for a time it appeared as if the design would cease to exist. But after recapturing Terra, ComStar placed a high priority on rebuilding their fleet, and they quickly looked to the successful Dante as a jumping off point. They upgraded the Dante's weapons, C3 systems, and armor to modern standards, though in the rush to get the design into production, they performed no other modifications to any other system. The modern Dante-class can take more punishment and dish out more damage, but the pre-existing problems with heat are even more pronounced than with the original design. Still, the modern Dante is a superior WarShip and anchors the ComStar naval fleets coming into the 32nd Century.
