Overview:

Once the Combine had mastered the technology of OmniMechs - the first one walked off the assembly lines in May of 3052 - its next logical next step was to tackle the OmniFighter. This proved much more difficult, however, and years would pass before a prototype OmniFighter would fly the skies. Finally, though plagued with problems, the Coordinator authorized the production and release of the Sai OmniFighter - a direct conversion of the craft whose production plant had been overrun by the Smoke Jaguars.
Though the release of the Sai was likely done as a boost to the morale of the DCMS, Wakazashi Enterprises was not willing to let the matter of an OmniFighter rest with the flawed Sai’s production. They immediately began work on a new OmniFighter that would be built from the ground up, using their years of trial and error on the Sai to correct the egregious errors of that craft. In 3062, the Tatsu OmniFighter flew its first test flight. After passing its trials with flying colors, it began mass production in 3063.
The Tatsu fought well, but as with so many other designs, the technological devastation of the Jihad resulted in the failure of large numbers from lack of spare parts, sometimes even more than from battlefield losses. For a time it appeared as though the OmniFighter would cease to exist, but Wakazashi Enterprises refused to let their most advanced fighter to fade away. They redesigned it with technologies that could be maintained with modern factories and released the MIK-2O in 3078.

Capabilities:

The goal with the Tatsu was to create an OmniFighter that could deliver a maximum amount of damage to ground-based targets. With an impressive thirty-two tons of pod space, even the MIK-2 amply accomplishes this goal. An impressive sixteen and half tons of laser reflection armor gives it superb protection for a craft its size, especially when its opponents use energy weapons.
Its weapons grids range from missiles, to lasers, to particle cannons, and to autocannons, and the Tatsu can engage an enemy at literally any range. This makes the approach of a Tatsu squadron in space or in the air worry anyone with a brain.

Deployment

Due to the large number of OmniMechs used in the Draconis Combine, deployment of the Tatsu is easy. Most Tatsus are deployed with line regiments that use OmniMechs, while they are much rarer in the militia or elite units that use standard BattleMechs. Nearly all Tatsu 2s are deployed by the Draconis Combine, with very few having left that nation. Even fewer Tatsu 1s still exist, making this design a true Combine symbol of modern warfare.
