Overview:
During the heyday of the Star League, Andurien Aerotech and Imstar Aerospace-both notable Free Worlds-based aerospace companies-debuted and produced conventional fighters that have become standards known far and wide across human-occupied space. Not to be outdone, the Federated Suns also managed to claim a piece of that same military niche when Jalastar Aerospace introduced its for-export conventional fighter concept, the Meteor Heavy Strike Fighter. Rather than mimicking the aggressive international sales approach used by its Free Worlds competitors, however, Jalastar took a more direct marketing strategy and aimed their strike fighter at customers in the Terran Hegemony.
This marketing campaign ended up having the same effect on Meteor sales as Andurien Aerotech’s and Imstar Aerospace’s Sphere-wide approach did with the Angel and the Defender strike fighters. Third-party sales prior to the fall of the Star League saw the Meteor exported to planetary garrisons across human-occupied space. The widely available specs allowed for a boom in homegrown production which resulted in a number of variants and modifications to the design. The Draconis Combine's Wakazashi Enterprises called their version the Inseki ("Meteorite") Heavy Strike Fighter, and began shipping it to planets throughout the Draconis Combine.
Unfortunately, the technological recession of the Succession Wars pushed the design out of use as their fusion engines became far too valuable for a mere AeroFghter. Most of them had their fusion engines removed in fact and replaced with cheaper turbine engines. These downgraded fighters rarely flew true though, and the design began to fade away due to equipment breakdowns and battle losses. By the end of the Succession Wars, the design was practically extinct, but the ComStar-Draconis Combine alliance that grew out of the Fourth Succession War changed that. The Draconis Combine began building the Inseki again in the 3030s, thanks to ComStar support. They also began building the Inseki II, an upgrade that greatly boosted its offensive power, and the strike fighters helped to blunt the Davion and Steiner offensives of 3039, saving the Combine from total collapse. They have remained a part of the Combine's military ever since, even during the darkest days of the Jihad, and their role in the continued survival of the Combine is never to be underestimated.
Capabilities:
The Inseki is basically a copy of the Meteor made with local components. The Shinobi fusion engine saves space, at the expense of cost, which allows the Inseki to carry a space-optimized SarLon MaxiCannon which can down most AeroFighters in a single hit and even cripple lighter AeroSpace Fighters foolish enough to tempt their fate against it. Backing this weapon is a pair of wing-mounted Shigunga missile packs, which are particularly ideal in anti-ground attack runs against vehicles or when targeting low-flying VTOLs. Even with this formidable array, however, most Insekis often fly into battle laden with enough external ordnance to threaten small concentrations of ground forces, including BattleMech and armor companies.
The Inseki II largely avoids this "secondary" role by replacing the entire weapons package. A Magna Hellstar particle cannon powered by the fusion engine replaces the autocannon and the Shigungas are replaced by longer-ranged brothers that can reach out and crush their enemies at an impressive range. A Sperry Browning machine gun keeps enemies that attempt to get into the Inseki II's rear playing fair. Able to strike hard from long range, the Inseki II has been replacing its older brother ever since, and is rarely used to carry bombs, to the great happiness of its pilots who don't want to close with their targets.
Deployment
The Inseki and Inseki II are used only by the Draconis Combine, though survivors of the Jihad can be seen throughout the Draconis Rifts in small numbers. The inability of many worlds to support the advanced fusion engines make them rare in those instances though. In the Draconis Combine, the Insekis are most often employed by richer militias or by powerful corporations to defend factories or other fixed installations. The Combine's army uses them to protect their military bases, sending them to patrol the skies of most worlds, and any air assault into the Combine can expect to meet a squadron or more of these as the first response fighter. If they are unable to halt the attack, they invariably give the DCMS time to launch heavier AeroSpace Fighters to deal with their killers.
