Overview:

The Word of Blake destruction of the Federated-Boeing Interstellar shipyards at Galax, the largest concentration of space-going industrial might in the Human Sphere, nearly destroyed the Federation. Had it fallen earlier in the Jihad, the realm's military might have collapsed, but it had taken years for the Word to draw enough of the defenses out so they could manage a strike at the most heavily defended site in the Federation. For the next decade, the Federation survived off the meager production of Delavan, or whatever other small manufacturers they could take over.
Rebuilding the Galax lines was always a priority though, and much of the spoils the Federation armies brought home from Terra went to rebuilding them. In 3080, the first of a new generation of Federation DropShips came off the first rebuilt line. The Federation quickly equipped their Mercenery Corps with the new Conquistador 2s, and along with the last of the surviving original Conquistadors, this new fleet heralded the FSMC's entrance into the St. Ives War under contract to New Syrtis.
The new Conquistadors use massed banks of turret-mounted autocannons to rake enemy craft, supported by missiles and lasers. They are sheathed in glazed armor, making them hard to kill with energy weapons, though despite the weapons and armor many have been lost in battle. The Conquistadors also happen to look exactly like the Arthur frigates, with the two actually designed to work in tandem. They link together, rarely separating except when entering atmosphere or combat. The Conquistador's launch bays are on the lower hull, where the ships link, allowing an Arthur-Conquistador pair to launch fighters from between ships without revealing their identity. It also allows the Conquistadors to unload the fighters when on the ground, while the vehicles, infantry, and BattleMechs march down the flanks.
The Conquistadors and Arthurs have become a common sight throughout old Federation space, with the arrival of one or more of their pairs the symbol of FSMC involvement in a conflict. Other larger or smaller craft often deploy with them, but these craft are the symbols, and the FSMC has gone to great effort to use and expand on that reputation.
