Overview:

Often referred to as the "poor man’s BattleMech," SecurityMechs (also occasionally referred to as RiotMechs or PoliceMechs) have had a long history in the Human Sphere. First used in the Terran Hegemony to help tanks and infantry take down rebellious populations that preferred their independence to Terran rule, the military piloted them but the advent of the true BattleMech relegated them to a support role. The various police forces and militias throughout the Hegemony soon purchased the surplus military units, and as BattleMechs become more common the militias sold them in favor of their more advanced brethren as well. The only forces that continued to use them after that were the police, private security firms, and some paramilitary organizations which could not afford a true BattleMech.
The standard SecurityMech carries as much armor as it can, an array of machine guns that can be loaded with nonlethal ammunition, and some multi-spectrum searchlights to find their targets. No real threat to a true BattleMech, they are most effective against unarmored civilians or armed infantry. In recent decades, they have also seen use against BattleArmor, though squads of such units have been known to take them down with little trouble.
Most police or security units with the money prefer to own at least one SecurityMech as they can often end a fight before it even begins. They are also an impressive moral boost for the people, and few city governments are willing to overlook that fact when the yearly budgets come up for a vote.
