         Usually weighing between one and two tons, the standard armored ATV used by military units around the Human Sphere is designed to carry between one and two soldiers, usually armed infantry, on patrol. Enclosed by armor, the ATV's riders are protected against most small-scale weapons and even some 'Mech-scale weapons. ATVs can range from two-wheeled "motorcycles", to three-wheeled "trikes", to four, six, eight or more-wheeled amphibious "ducks" that are often used by marines as landing craft.
         Armored ATVs are most often used by militia units too poor to purchase their own armored personnel carriers, and each ATV is usually owned by the individual rider rather than the military. Also often used by gangs, some worlds have introduced legislation to limit their use. It is common on many worlds to see a group of these vehicles driving down the road, or cross country if the individual vehicle is equipped for that. They can be fitted with a number of anti-infantry weapons, making them a powerful enemy to other infantry units, though rarely have weapons capable of doing significant damage to a BattleMech or true armored combat vehicle.
         Civilian ATVs tend to lack the heavy armored cocoon, making them open to the elements but greatly reducing their total weight and the strain caused on the ATV's suspension.
