Overview:

         After the Clan defeat on Tukayyid, ComStar immediately began upgrading several small production facilities in the Free Rasalhague Republic into 'Mech factories. Then in 3058, when ComStar was driven from Terra, all of its Mongoose scout 'Mechs were destroyed. Rather than order more, the Precentor Martial decided to build a new 'Mech that would serve as a scout without the Mongoose's lack of firepower and mobility. The new 'Mech from Odin Manufacturing on Orestes, the Beowulf was nearly twice as heavy as the Mongoose but it sported jump capability.
         The Beowulf fought well during the FedCom Civil War and the Jihad, but combat losses resulted in the near destruction of the class, especially in ComStar where Terra bled them badly. After the Jihad, ComStar needed to quickly rebuild its shattered army. They looked to the now battle-proven Beowulf design to act as their primary line combat unit, and worked with Rasalhague to redesign it into an OmniMech. The resulting upgrade in capabilities made the BattleMech a deadly new addition to the rebuilding ComStar and Rasalhague forces.

Capabilities:

         The Beowulf is extremely mobile, A GM XL engine providing impressive speed along with a large amount of pod space. Built into the base is a Blake's Vision Improved C3 system, a Purifier ER small laser, and triple-strength myomer to give it an impressive speed boost at need. The base configuration is much like the original design, with jump jets added for extra mobility. Combined with that is the firepower provided by a large and two medium pulse lasers. As a scout 'Mech, the Beowulf is also equipped with a Beagle active probe and a TAG system to direct incoming artillery.
         Configuration A removes the special electronics and uses the mass savings to pack in two large pulse lasers. Incredibly deadly and accurate, this is one of the most common configurations in use.
         Configuration B is another common configuration, most often used in a fire support role, though they have also shown to be deadly in a forward assault position. The B strips the jump jets off to free up as much mass as possible. Each arm then carries a nine-tube advanced missile system of Clan origin with five tons of ammunition. This configuration can soften an enemy up at extreme range, and rip it apart at shorter ranges if needed.
         Today's configuration C is not the original C from 3079. The original carried an ultra autocannon in the right torso, but in 3090 the Rasalhague Dominion replaced it with a RAC of Clan origin. Far more deadly than the Davion RACs, this design is often seen chewing through opponents. ComStar upgraded all of their OmniPods to this configuration no later than 3093.
         The final configuration currently in use is at first glance also the least powerful. It reintroduces the jump jets, adds a single large laser, twin mediums, a second small, and two micro lasers. While it can start sniping at extreme range, it rarely stays there. The two pods on the inside of either arm carry hidden swords that can be deployed before charging into physical combat. This configuration is often used by Beowulfs charged with protecting other 'Mechs from being mugged by enemy short-ranged specialists.

Deployment

         It is by far the most common BattleMech in the Com Guards. Seen on every duty station that ComStar maintains, they have become a symbol of ComStar authority. The Rasalhague Dominion also makes large use of the design, seeing it as an effective medium battle and scout unit.
